Wonderworld Exhibition at CCCAH

Wonderworld Exhibition at CCCAH

It is with great pleasure, that I present my solo exhibition entitled Wonderworld.

This exhibition will be on display at CCCAH (Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Angra do Heroísmo).

From November 27, 2020 to the end of January , 2021

Opening on November 27 at 6 pm

Wonderworld brings us a set of works inserted in a world, sometimes surreal, with extraordinary figures that distract us from its true essence, and that lead us to thoughts and life stories, which we can recognize and identify in our world or reality.

Due to the new restrictions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the opening will be closed to the public.

“I was perfect!”

“I was perfect!”

The painting “I was perfect” was inspired by “Black Swan”, an American psychological horror film directed by Darren Aronofsky.

This painting shows us a dancer obsessed with perfection, forced to free her dark side, despite all the manipulations and reprimands to which she is subjected. Often, behind a brilliant performance, there is trauma and madness, so I include tears to highlight the farce behind the perfect pose.

“Beauty Inside Out”

“Beauty Inside Out”

The painting “Beauty Inside Out” was inspired by the eponymous short story by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont and the film “Beauty and the Beast”, directed by Bill Condon.

This painting shows us a beautiful woman who learns to look beyond physical appearance, to recognize the true human heart and soul.

Year: 2020
Technique: Glazing over Grisaille

“Off with her head”

“Off with her head”

The painting “Off with her head” was inspired by The Queen of Hearts, a fictional character from the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and Tim Burton’s film interpretation.

This painting shows us a foul-tempered monarch, authoritarian and with doubtful beauty, who solves all difficulties, big or small, shouting: “Off with their heads!”.

Unfortunately in our lives, we often have to deal with people with a temperament similar to the Queen of Hearts … which makes us “lose our heads”!

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimension: 50 x 70 cm / 20 x 28 inch
Year: 2020
Technique: Glazing over Grisaille

“Drink me”

“Drink me”

The piece “Drink me” is an oil painting inspired by Alice from Lewis Carroll’s children’s story “Alice in Wonderland”.

This painting shows us the surreal and absurd side of a teenager’s dreams, where Alice appears having a tea in a totally inverted reality. This reveals many of the feelings of adolescence, and the way they see themselves in the world.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimension: 70 x 100 cm / 28 x 39 inch
Year: 2020
Technique: Glazing over Grisaille

“Mirror, mirror on the wall”

“Mirror, mirror on the wall”

The piece “Mirror, mirror on the wall” is my version of the Evil Queen inspired by the character played by Charlize Theron in the fantasy film “Snow White and the Huntsman”, directed by Rupert Sanders.

Evil queen is one of my favorite villans, especially in the Charlize interpretation. For this reason, I decided to represent her blonde, with light eyes and incorporate some elements of the film, such as the golden crown and a feather coat, whose gradient was inspired by a Zuhair Murad jacket.

This painting shows us The Queen looking at herself in the mirror as the fairest of all, while the crow holds the key that can unleash the Snow White.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimension: 50 x 70 cm / 19.68 x 27.55 inch
Year: 2019
Technique: Glazing over Grisaille

“Lolita”

“Lolita”

The piece Lolita was inspired by the character of the novel written by Vladimir Nabokov and in the second film adaptation of it.

This painting shows us Lolita as a beautiful teenager, trying to be seductive with her lips blurred in red.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimension: 40 x 50 cm / 15.74 x 19.68 inch
Year: 2019
Technique: Glazing over Grisaille

“Angelique Bouchard”

“Angelique Bouchard”

The piece Angelique Bouchard was inspired by the fictional character of the film Dark Shadows, in which she is the main antagonist. She is a powerful witch driven by her hesitant love and hatred for Barnabas Collins.

This painting shows us how it is possible to have opposing feelings about a person and how those feelings can crack even who seem unbreakable.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimension: 40 x 50 cm / 15.74 x 19.68 inch
Year: 2019
Technique: Glazing over Grisaille

“Lily”

“Lily”

The piece Lily was inspired by Lilith Sullivan, a demonic girl and main antagonist of the 2009 psychological horror film Case 39.

This painting shows us that sometimes, behind an innocent and beautiful appearance, an evil being is hidden and how easily we can be under delusion, which will affect perilously our lives.
